SK4002-03-INTERPERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS
Part 1: Your Detailed Guide to Interpersonal Effectiveness
From Good with Numbers to Great with People
A Workshop on Interpersonal Effectiveness: Your Key to Career Success
Welcome to Mercury Edutech Academy's Soft
& Life Skills Program!
For years, we have been Nagercoil's leading
academy for building technical skills. We create brilliant CAs, CMAs,
CPAs, and bankers who are masters of finance, law, and accounting.
But we've learned a universal truth:
Your technical skills might get you the
job. But it's your people skills that will get you the promotion.
"Interpersonal Effectiveness" is the master skill that ties everything else together. It's the ability to communicate, build trust, and navigate any social situation with confidence and respect. This workshop is designed to give you that "X-factor" that sets you apart.
What
is Interpersonal Effectiveness ?
Interpersonal Effectiveness is the practical, learnable skill of getting what you need, while maintaining (or even improving) your relationships.
It's the art of balance. Many people only know two-speed settings:
- Passive ("Pushover"): You always say "yes," you avoid conflict, you put others' needs first, and you secretly feel resentful. You lose, they win.
- Aggressive ("Bulldozer"): You must win at all costs, you steamroll others, you state your needs as demands, and you damage relationships. You win, they lose.
This course teaches you the third, most powerful option:
3. Assertive ("Professional"):
You clearly and respectfully state your needs, you listen to theirs, and you
aim for a solution where both people feel heard. You win, and they win (or at
least, they feel respected).Getty Images
Why Is This Workshop a "Career-Maker"?
In every professional course we teach, this skill is the key to success:
- For our CA/CMA/ACCA Students: How do you handle a difficult audit client? How do you manage your junior articles? How do you present to a partner? This is the skill.
- For our IBPS PO/Clerk Aspirants: How do you handle an angry customer? How do you ace the PO interview? How do you work effectively in a branch team? This is the skill.
For All Leaders & Professionals: This is the core of management. It's how you
give feedback, resolve team conflicts, and motivate people.
By mastering these skills, you will:
- Handle conflict and criticism with grace and confidence.
- Build trust and rapport with clients, colleagues, and bosses.
- Become a powerful, persuasive communicator.
- Know how to say "no" politely and effectively.
Reduce stress, as 90% of our stress comes from
"people problems."

Frequently asked questions
Here are some common questions about our company and services.
A. THE BASICS : UNDERSTANGING THE SKILL
It is the skill of interacting with others in a way that is effective and mutually satisfying. It means you can achieve your goals while building and maintaining good relationships .
Communication is a part of it, but this is much broader. It also includes assertiveness, conflict resolution, empathy, and listening. It's the "master skill" of people .
No. This is a common mistake. "Being nice" is often "Passive" behavior. This course teaches you to be kind and respectful, but also clear and firm .
Absolutely not. Manipulation is getting what you want at someone else's expense, often dishonestly. Interpersonal Effectiveness is about being open, honest, and finding a "win-win" solution .
Yes, 100%. This is not a course to turn you into an extrovert. It's a course to give you the skills to interact confidently as an introvert. Many introverts become the most effective listeners and communicators .
This
course is also for you. Often, "strong personalities" are actually
"Aggressive" communicators, which can damage team morale. We'll teach
you how to be just as strong and effective, but in a way that builds
relationships instead of breaking them
.
To
help you find the balance between achieving your goals and maintaining your
relationships
.
It's
a "human skill," and it's one of the hardest and most valuable skills
to master .
This
course is a key component of building your EQ. Interpersonal Effectiveness is
the "action" part of Emotional Intelligence .
In
a world of AI and automation, your technical skills can be replicated. Your
human skills—your ability to collaborate, manage, and connect—are what make you
irreplaceable
.
B. THE CORE SKILL : ASSERTIVENESS
Assertiveness is the ability to express your thoughts, feelings, and needs in a clear, honest, and respectful way, without violating the rights of others .
- Passive: You don't speak up. Your needs are not met. (You lose, they win).
- Aggressive: You speak up, but in a demanding, hostile, or blaming way. (You win, they lose).
- Assertive: You speak up clearly, calmly, and respectfully. You aim for a win-win .
This course is made for you! It will feel uncomfortable at first, but we will give you the tools and a safe space to practice setting small, healthy boundaries .
We teach many techniques, including:
- The "Sandwich": (Positive - No - Positive) "I appreciate you asking, but I can't take on that project right now. I hope I can help on the next one."
- The "Delay": "Let me check my
schedule and get back to you ".
No.
Being aggressive is rude. Being assertive is just being clear. "I
understand you need this, but I am in the middle of a deadline. I can help you
after 4 PM." That is clear, not rude
.
This
is "indirect" aggression. It's when you are angry but don't say it.
(e.g., "Fine, whatever" or "I'm not mad" when you clearly
are). This is very damaging. We teach you to be direct (Assertive) .
C. CONFLICT,CRITICISM AND FEEDBACK
No. Conflict is normal and can be healthy. It's just a sign that two people have different needs. Unresolved or poorly-handled conflict is bad .
Yes. Avoiding conflict doesn't make it go away; it just makes it get worse. You'll learn how to handle conflict calmly and early, so it doesn't build up .
The goal is not to "win." The goal is to solve the problem and preserve the relationship .
This is a key skill. We teach the "Listen, Acknowledge, Ask, Thank" method.
- Listen: Don't interrupt.
- Acknowledge: "I hear what you're saying."
- Ask: "Can you tell me more about that?"
- Thank: "Thank you for that feedback. I'll think
about it
.
We teach the "Feedback Sandwich."
- Top bread: Start with something genuinely positive.
- The "meat": Give the specific, constructive criticism ("I noticed that...").
- Bottom bread: End with an encouraging or positive statement
.
D. REAL WORLD APPLICATIONS
You will be able to handle a difficult audit client, ask clarifying questions to your seniors, and present your findings to a partner with confidence .
This is 90% of your job. You'll learn to handle an angry customer with a "calm and in-control" script, and you will ace the PO interview's "What would you do if..." questions .
It teaches you to build rapport with the interviewer, answer questions clearly (without rambling), and ask intelligent questions. Your body language will project confidence .
You'll learn to manage "up." This means learning to communicate in their preferred style, setting boundaries respectfully, and presenting solutions, not just problems .
You'll learn to use assertive communication to address the problem directly and respectfully, without blaming or being aggressive. "I noticed you missed the deadline. I need you to complete your part by 3 PM so I can do mine. What's going on?".
Yes,
all participants who successfully complete the workshop will receive a
Certificate of Completion from Mercury Edutech Academy.
This is the skill of networking. Networking isn't about collecting cards; it's about building relationships. This course teaches you how to do that.
This
might be the biggest benefit. All the skills—listening, assertiveness, conflict
resolution—are 100% transferable to your home life
.
A huge amount of stress comes from unresolved conflicts, saying "yes" when you mean "no," and feeling misunderstood. This course gives you the tools to fix all three .
E. RELATION TO OTHER SKILLS
Active Listening is the foundation of interpersonal effectiveness. You must complete our "Listening" course, or be proficient in it, to get the most from this one .
Empathy is the heart of this skill. Empathy is how you understand the other person. Assertiveness is how you express yourself. You need both .
Self-esteem is the courage. You need healthy self-esteem to believe you have the right to be assertive. This is why we recommend taking these courses together .
Yes. Interpersonal Effectiveness (or "Social Skill") is one of the key pillars of EQ .
