SK4003-04-CREATIVE AND CRITICAL THINKING

Part 1: Your Detailed Guide to Critical & Creative Thinking

Don't Just Learn. Learn How to Think.

A Workshop on Critical & Creative Thinking: Your Ultimate Career Skill

Welcome to Mercury Edutech Academy's Soft & Life Skills Program!

For years, we've been Nagercoil's #1 academy for building technical mastery. We train CAs, CMAs, and bankers who know the laws, the formulas, and the procedures. But in a world of AI, automation, and complex problems, what you know is only half the battle.

The real value is in how you think.

  • Can you analyze a complex problem and find its hidden root?
  • Can you look at an old process and invent a new, smarter way?

This workshop is designed to build your "mental horsepower." It will teach you the two most powerful thinking skills: Critical Thinking (the "logic" engine) and Creative Thinking (the "idea" engine).

What is Critical Thinking? (Your Logic Engine)

Critical Thinking is the skill of being a disciplined, objective analyst. It's the ability to break down information, evaluate it without bias, and make a sound judgment.

It's your mental "quality control" and "lie detector."

  • It asks: "Is this true? What's the evidence? Are there any hidden assumptions?"
  • It's a convergent skill: it helps you find the one best solution by filtering out the bad ones.

Why you need it (as a CA, Banker, etc.):

  • Audit: "Is this financial data logical, or am I seeing a sign of fraud?"
  • Banking (IBPS): "Does this loan application really make sense? What are the hidden risks?"

Exams: "What is this complex case study really asking me to solve?"

What is Creative Thinking? (Your Idea Engine)

Creative Thinking is the skill of being an imaginative, open-minded explorer. It's the ability to build up new ideas and look at problems from a fresh, non-obvious angle.

It's your mental "what if..." button.

  • It asks: "Is there another way? What if we tried this? What are we missing?"

It's a divergent skill: it helps you generate many possible solutions to a single problem.

Why you need it (as a CA, Banker, etc.):

  • Consulting: "The client has a tax problem. What are three different, legal ways we can structure this deal?"
  • Management: "Our team's morale is low. What are 10 new ideas to improve it?"
  • Exams: "This reasoning puzzle is confusing. Let me try looking at it from a different angle.

The Power of Both: Your "Mental Superpower"

This workshop shows how these two skills are partners. You can't just be one or the other.

  • Creative Thinking creates the options.
  • Critical Thinking chooses the best option.

Why Is This Workshop Your Key to Success ?

This is the skill that separates a "doer" from a "thinker." A "doer" follows instructions. A "thinker" is given a problem and comes back with a solution. Thinkers get promoted.

  • Ace Your Case-Study Exams: The CA Final, Level III CFA, and CMA Final are not memory tests. They are thinking tests. This course is a "bootcamp" for solving complex case studies.
  • Crack Reasoning Puzzles (IBPS): You'll learn the logical frameworks to solve complex puzzles faster and the creative "outside-the-box" thinking to get unstuck.
  • Nail the PO Interview: When they ask, "What would you do if...?", they are testing this. You'll learn to structure your answer, show your logic, and present a creative solution.
  • Become "Future-Proof": AI can calculate, but it can't (yet) think critically or creatively about a brand new, complex business problem. This is the human skill that makes you irreplaceable.

What You Will Learn in This Workshop ?

Module 1: The Thinker's Mindset

  • Identifying your own "Cognitive Biases" (the mental shortcuts that lead you to bad decisions).
  • Fixed vs. Growth Mindset: Why believing you can "get smarter" is the first step .

Module 2: The Critical Thinking Toolkit

  • Root Cause Analysis: Using the "5 Whys" to find the real problem, not just the symptom.
  • Argument Analysis: How to spot "Logical Fallacies" (flaws in an argument).
  • Decision-Making Models: Simple frameworks (like a "Pro/Con/Fix" model) for making a sound choice.

Module 3: The Creative Thinking Toolkit

  • Brainstorming: The right way to do it (quantity over quality, no judgment).
  • Lateral Thinking: Techniques (like "Random Word") to break out of your usual thought patterns.
  • SCAMPER: A 7-step "idea generator" (Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, Reverse.

Module 4: The "Thinking in Action" Lab

  • Case Study Practice: We'll apply these tools to solve real-world finance and banking problems.
  • The "Six Thinking Hats": A powerful group technique to look at a problem from all angles.

Who Is This Course For?

  • Students (CA/CMA/ACCA/CFA/CPA): Who need to move from "memorizing" to "analyzing" to pass their final-level, case-study exams.
  • Bank Aspirants (IBPS/SBI): Who want to master the Reasoning section and confidently handle "situational" interview questions.
  • Working Professionals: Who feel "stuck" in their career and want to be seen as a problem-solver and a leader.

Anyone: Who wants to make better, smarter, and more creative decisions in their life.

Why Learn at Mercury Edutech Academy?

  • It's Relevant: We don't use generic puzzles. Our case studies are from your world: "An audit discrepancy," "A bank branch with falling sales," "A complex client tax issue."
  • It's Practical: This is a workshop, not a lecture. You will be thinking, solving, and collaborating.
  • It's the Missing Piece: We are Nagercoil's finance experts. We give you the technical knowledge. This course gives you the wisdom to apply it.

Your technical skills are your foundation. Your thinking skills are the skyscraper you build on top.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some common questions about our company and services.

A. THE BASICS : What Are These Skills ?

Critical Thinking is the skill of analyzing information objectively to form a sound judgment. It's about being logical, skeptical, and finding the truth .

Creative Thinking is the skill of generating new and original ideas. It's about being imaginative, open-minded, and looking at problems from a fresh perspective .

  • Critical Thinking is convergent. It's about filtering ideas down to the one best solution.
  • Creative Thinking is divergent. It's about generating as many ideas as possible .

No, they are partners. You use creativity to brainstorm 10 solutions, and then you use critical thinking to pick the best one .

Yes! This is the #1 myth. Creativity is not a "talent" you are born with; it's a skill and a process that anyone can learn and practice .

Creativity is just "problem-solving." When your client has a complex financial problem, you need to be creative to find a legal, ethical solution that saves them money. That's creativity .

Great ideas are useless if they aren't practical. Critical thinking is the skill that turns your "what if..." idea into a "here's how..." plan .

This is a key part of creative thinking. It's about solving problems by taking an indirect or non-obvious approach, "thinking outside the box" .

It's a mental "shortcut" or "blind spot" that leads you to a wrong conclusion. A common one is "Confirmation Bias" (only looking for information that supports your existing belief). We teach you to spot these .

No. "Common sense" is often filled with biases. This is a structured, disciplined process for thinking that is better than common sense .

B. ABOUT CRITICAL THINKING

Asking "Why?" Don't just accept information. Ask why it's true, what the evidence is, and who is saying it .

It's the process of finding the real problem, not just the symptom. We teach a simple tool called the "5 Whys" to do this .

It's a flaw in reasoning that makes an argument invalid. (e.g., "This must be a good idea because our competitor is doing it" - that's a fallacy!).

No. It makes you an objective and discerning person. You won't be easily fooled, and your decisions will be better .

This is the skill of "professional skepticism," which is a mandatory part of being an auditor. You'll learn to question assumptions and find hidden problems .

Read an article and try to identify the author's main argument, their assumptions, and their biases. Check their sources .

It's a way of learning by asking deep, probing questions. We use this method in the workshop .

A fact is supported by evidence. An assumption is something taken for granted. Critical thinkers always separate the two .

It's the skill of breaking a large, complex problem down into its small, manageable parts .

It's the opposite of analysis (and a creative skill). It's about combining different small parts to create a new, whole idea .

C. ABOUT CREATIVE THINKING

  • Change your perspective: How would a 10-year-old solve this? How would a (CA, banker, artist) solve this?
  • Change your environment: Go for a walk.
  • Change your input: Read a random article. We teach these in the workshop .

It's a technique for generating a high quantity of ideas in a short time .

No judgment. There are no bad ideas in a brainstorm. The "crazy" idea often sparks the practical one .

  • Fear of failure.
  • Fear of looking stupid.
  • Following rules blindly.
  • Saying, "That's not how we've always done it" .

It's an "idea-generation" checklist:

  • Substitute (What if I change this part?)
  • Combine (What if I mix these two ideas?)
  • Adapt (What else is like this?)
  • Modify (Can I make it bigger/smaller?)
  • Put to another use (Can I use this for something else?)
  • Eliminate (What if I remove this part?)
  • Reverse (What if I did it the opposite way?).

Be curious. Read books outside your field. Talk to people who are different from you. Ask "What if..." a lot .

This is creative thinking. It's diverging from a single point to generate many possible options .

This is critical thinking. It's converging on a single, best solution from all the options. You need both .

The "box" is your set of unstated assumptions. This is the skill of identifying those assumptions and challenging them .

You use both! You use creative thinking to see the different possible arrangements, and critical thinking to logically eliminate the ones that don't fit the rules .

D. BENEFITS & APPLICATIONS

Those exams are 90% case studies. A case study is just a complex problem. This course teaches you the framework to (1) analyze the problem, (2) brainstorm solutions, and (3) pick and justify the best one .

The interviewer will ask, "Suppose your branch is not meeting its targets. What would you do?" They are testing your critical and creative thinking. You'll learn to give a structured, smart answer .

This is the process of decision-making. You'll learn to stop making decisions based on "gut feeling" (which is full of bias) and start making them based on a logical, creative process .

This is the A-to-Z of problem-solving. Critical thinking finds the real problem, and creative thinking finds the new solution .

Yes. Leadership is strategy. And strategy is critical and creative thinking. This is how you move from "manager" to "leader" .

You will stop being the person who "follows instructions" and become the person who "solves problems." That person gets the promotion .

AI is a tool that is very good at critical thinking (analyzing data). It is not (yet) good at creative thinking (handling new, undefined problems) or complex critical thinking (understanding context). This course builds the human-only skills .

You will learn how to learn. You'll learn to connect ideas, analyze arguments, and think for yourself, which makes studying more effective .

Yes! You'll make better financial decisions, solve family problems more effectively, and stop losing arguments based on logical fallacies .

Yes. Stress often comes from feeling "overwhelmed" and "stuck." This course gives you a clear process for getting "unstuck," which gives you a feeling of control .
