Your Complete Guide from Mercury Edutech Academy, Nagercoil
Welcome, ambitious finance professionals!
At Mercury Edutech Academy, we are committed to bringing the world's most powerful career qualifications right here to Nagercoil. You've heard of CA, CMA, and ACCA. Now, let's talk about the "gold standard" of accounting in the United States: the CPA (Certified Public Accountant).
If you dream of working in a "Big 4" firm, specializing in US-based finance, or working for a top-tier multinational company, the CPA is your ultimate ticket. It is one of the most respected and highest-paying qualifications in the finance world.
What is a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) ?
A CPA is the US equivalent of the Indian Chartered Accountant (CA). A CPA license is granted by one of the 55 US state boards of accountancy and signifies the highest level of competence in the field.
CPAs are experts in:
- US GAAP: The accounting principles used by US-based companies.
- US Auditing: Auditing US companies accordings to US standards.
- US Taxation: A massive field, including US federal and state tax.
- Business Regulation: Understanding the US legal and business environment.
Why Should You Choose a Career as a CPA?
- Massive Demand in India: The Big 4 (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) and other large firms (like Grant Thornton, BDO, Withum) have enormous offices in Indian cities (like Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad) dedicated to US Tax, US Audit, and US Advisory. They are constantly hiring CPAs.
- Global Powerhouse: As the #1 US qualification, it is respected by every multinational company in the world.
- High Earning Potential: CPAs command some of the highest salaries in the finance industry due to their specialized skills.
- Global Mobility: A CPA license is your key to working in the United States and also has mutual recognition agreements with countries like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
A Major Update: The "CPA Evolution" (2024/2025 Onwards)
The CPA exam has just undergone a major, student-friendly update. This new model is designed to test the skills modern accountants need.
The new exam model is "3 Core + 1 Discipline." This means you still take 4 exams, but you get to choose your specialization!
|
Exam Type |
Section (You must pass all 3) |
|
CORE |
AUD (Auditing and Attestation) |
|
CORE |
FAR (Financial Accounting and Reporting) |
|

DISCIPLINE |
You must choose ONE of these 3 specializations: |
|
BAR (Business Analysis and Reporting) |
|

ISC (Information Systems and Controls) |
|

TCP (Tax Compliance and Planning) |
This is fantastic news! It means you can focus your final exam on the career path that interests you most—whether it's advanced tax, data analytics, or financial reporting.
The 3 "E"s: Your Path to Becoming a CPA
Becoming a CPA involves three key steps. This is where it gets complex, but at Mercury Edutech, we will guide you through all of it.
1. Education (The Eligibility Hurdle)
This is the most critical part for Indian students. The CPA is a US qualification, and you must meet US educational standards, which are measured in "credit hours."
- To Sit for the Exam: Most states require 120 credit hours.
- To Get the License: Most states require 150 credit hours.
How Indian Education Translates (General Guide):
|
Your Indian Qualification |
Approx. US Credit Hours |
Status |

Not Eligible. You need a "bridge course." |
|

|
3-Year B.Com + 2-Year M.Com |
90 + 60 = 150 Credits |
Golden Path! Eligible for both exam & license. |
|
3-Year B.Com + CA / CMA / CS |
90 + 60 = 150 Credits |
Golden Path! Eligible for both exam & license. |
Mercury Edutech's Value: This is complex. Our first service to you is a free eligibility check. We will help you evaluate your credits and, most importantly, help you choose the right US State Board (like Alaska, Montana, New York) that is best for international students.
2. Examination
You must pass all four exams (3 Core + 1 Discipline) with a score of 75 on each. You have a 30-month "rolling window" to pass all four exams after you pass your first one. This is a recent, student-friendly change from the old 18-month window.
3. Experience
To get your license, you need 1-2 years of work experience (depending on the state) verified by a licensed CPA. The great news is this experience can often be gained here in India at a Big 4 or other MNC, as long as you have a CPA on your team who can sign off on it.

The CPA license is granted by one of the 55 US State Boards of Accountancy (e.g., California Board, New York Board) .
- AICPA (American Institute of CPAs) sets the exam.
- NASBA (National Association of State Boards of Accountancy) administers the exam and manages international applications .

Yes! The demand for CPAs in India is extremely high. The Big 4 and dozens of MNCs have massive US-facing offices in India (in cities like Chennai and Bangalore) and actively hire CPAs for high-paying roles .
Once you are eligible, most students can pass all 4 exams within 12 to 18 months of focused study .
It is very difficult, but common. Most people first qualify as a CA, and then their CA qualification makes them instantly eligible to sit for the CPA exam .

Yes! A 3-year B.Com (90 credits) + your professional qualification (often valued at 60+ credits) makes you eligible for the 150-credit rule .
The US does not have one national rule. Each of the 55 states (like New York, California, Alaska, Guam) sets its own rules. Some are very friendly to international students (e.g., they don't require a US Social Security Number), while others are not .
This depends on your education. States like Alaska, Montana, New York, and Washington are often popular because they have flexible requirements for international candidates. We will help you choose the one that's right for you .
You must send your university transcripts to a foreign credential evaluation service (like WES or NASBA International Evaluation Services - NIES). We will guide you on this process .
